8.6 Pulsed Laser Deposition
Pulsed laser ablation provides a variety of thin coatings, from a wide range of target materials, on a wide range of substrates at room temperature. The process is described as a sequence of steps, starting with the interaction of laser radiation with a solid target, absorption of energy, localized heating of the surface, and subsequent material evaporation (ablation plume). The composition and the properties of the ablation plume may evolve through plume–laser radiation interactions and by collisions between particles in the plume itself. Finally, the plume impinges on the substrate, producing a coating.
Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been proposed for producing bioactive glass coatings as an alternative method to enameling and plasma spraying, because it has several processing advantages, such as the production of films from high-melting materials, stoichiometric transfer of the target composition, lack of contamination, and fine control of the film properties [15]. The introduction of a reactive gas atmosphere allows composition modulation and preserves the bonding configuration of the final coatings. The choice of the reactive atmosphere in which the plasma plume was generated affects the bonding configuration of the resulting film in terms of the presence of non-bonding oxygen groups, which are important for bioactive behavior. A disadvantage of PLD technique is that the films are not as dense as those deposited by other techniques, such as magnetron sputtering.
